If you regularly use Facebook, you will have noticed that new Facebook has brought some massive changes. Most of the feedback that we’ve seen has been negative as lots of people are resistant to change, however new Facebook has brought many positive changes that can help you promote your business:

  • From 1st October all custom Facebook pages must be hosted on secure pages (https) keeping you more secure online.
  • On the top right hand side of your homepage on Facebook, you can now see an up to date activity feed, this will give you more opportunities to see what others are doing, and to watch conversations and activity to make sure that you jump in to any conversations which could lead to an opportunity or referral for you.
  • You can now see more people who are online and available to chat on the bottom right hand side of your homepage on Facebook. Previously you were limited to people that you interact with frequently, now you can see all of your Facebook contacts who are online. Don’t forget that this is social networking, and it’s the social conversations (ie, what are you up to these days) that can lead to opportunities for you.
  • You can now subscribe to people’s updates, even if they are not your “friend” on Facebook. A great opportunity to watch your competition (although you won’t see all of the secrets, as they can choose which updates to make public) and to watch people that you would like to do business with.
  • It’s now more important than ever to make your Facebook status updates as engaging as possible, as those posts with more likes and comments will appear nearer the top of the newsfeed, so that they are seen more often. Engaging posts encourage interaction, and it is in the conversations and comments where opportunities present themselves.
  • In business page mode, there are now recommendations for pages that may be of interest to you. This is a great way to find out about people that you may be able to do business with in the future, as not every page owner has structured their pages to be found easily in searches.

Alongside the above positive changes, don’t forget that a custom Facebook page can make a big impact on driving traffic to your website, and to allow visitors to your page to see very clearly what it is that you do, so even if they don’t “like” the page, it’s far more likely that they will go to your website.
