Responsive web design is used to describe the design of a website that allows the layout to change depending on what screen the website visitor uses. This means that the website will work well no matter if viewed on a PC, laptop, tablet or mobile device.
It is imperative that your site can be viewed easily on all devices, as more and more people choose to access the internet “on the go”, and use whatever spare time they have to access information online. No matter whether your site is aimed at the consumer market or the corporate market, if it cannot be seen on mobile devices/tablets, you will certainly have a higher bounce rate, and lose visitors to your competitors.
Web designers and developers work closely together to create a website that detects the size of screen that it is displayed in, and changes format of the site to reflect this. For example, a site that fits full width of your PC screen might have 3 columns, which would be really difficult to read on a mobile device, so the responsive web design team may change the format to one column on the mobile device, they may amend font size and image size to appear more attractive and readable on a smaller screen, and some parts of the site that are available on full PC screen may be discarded on much smaller devices.
As the tablet market grows, and new technology becomes available to work and to browse the internet on the move, it will become increasingly important to make sure that your website does not just fit devices today, but those of tomorrow too, and this is where responsive web design really makes a difference, as they are completely fluid designs, and reduce/increase in percentage size rather than in pixels depending on the device on which they are viewed.
